As usual, there will be some new gear purchased for this trip, and some tougher gear decisions that will need to be made.First and foremost, it's pretty clear that I'm going to need to get myself a bear canister. I know it's going to suck to carry one of those beasts, but it would suck more to have my food or myself eaten by a bear so I really have no choice. At least we'll be spending the first 3 nights below the tree line so I won't have to try to cram 8 days worth of food into one canister. I should be able to hang some items and consume enough during those first few days to allow everything to fit once we move above the tree line. So far the frontrunner appears to be the Bear Vault BV500.
It should be big enough at 8.7 x 12.7in (21 x 32cm) Volume: 700cu in (11.5L) to carry 6 days worth of food yet fit inside whichever pack I choose. The down side: Weight: 2lb 9oz
I may or may not opt for a new set of trekking poles. I took Yumi's with me to the Beartooths in 2009 and did some damage to both. One was bent pretty good when I nearly took a tumble and I lost the basket on the other. I should be able to coax one more trip out of my REI brand sticks considering the terrain won't be as demanding as the Beartooths or Winds would be.
Which pack comes along will be dependent on which swallows the bear canister more easily. I suspect the Six Moon Designs Starlite will emerge victorious over the Granite gear Vapor Trail.
