Meet the Hikers

Hiker's Bio

Interesting Hiker Facts

Dorf, Manitowoc, WI
This will be Dorf's (also known as "Rainman") 4th year as trip planner for this motley crew, having facilitated successful trips to the Wind River Range, Cloud Peak Wilderness and the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness, as well as two wussy trips with his wife to Glacier National Park and to the Winds. Dorf will often catch his breath by taking a dozen photos of the same thing.
  • Stil does not use TP on the trail.
  • Is very glad that Bob is going along since he might be a slower hiker than I
  • Once lost his hat 2 hours into a week-long trip above the tree line in the Wind Rivers. Idiot.
  • Gets in shape for these hikes by going on these hikes and eating a lot of pizza and bratwurst
  • Current hat sucks

Bob, Oostburg, WI
This will be Bob's first backpacking trip west of the Mississippi and his first with Dorf. Bob has recently gotten back into backpacking after spending most of his outdoor life canoeing the Boundary Waters Canoe Area and eating hot dogs up at his cottage. A master story teller, I am counting on Bob to keep us entertained and to hike slower than me.
  • Built a beautiful log outhouse at his cottage near Eagle River, WI
  • Likes good coffee and oranges for a snack.
  • Likes to tell stories about his good buddy Bozo McDonald.
  • Has a sucky North Face hat.  WTF, Bob?
  • Bob does not own a cell phone but is older than dirt.

Steve, Benicia, CA
This may be Steve's initial foray  into wilderness area backpacking after spending an obscene amount of time in Glacier.  Like the "Kid" last year, I know nothing about this dude other than he's from California and likely an American citizen. To make him more comfortable with all the Wisconsinites, Steve will be made an honorary Wisconsin citizen after he eats some raw Spam.
  • Lives in a state that hasn't slid into the Pacific Ocean yet
  • I assume he has a hat but don't know how good it is yet.
  • Was born on planet Earth sometime in the last century
  • Likes to relax by taking long hot bubble baths while reading romance novels.
  • Will probably have the best nickname of the group by the end of he trip.

Lee, Oshkosh, WI
Another newbie to the group, Lee, lives in the town that made Oshkosh B'Gosh famous and works in my least favorite city, Fond du Lac. Lee spent some time last summer in the Tetons so I'm hoping he's not confusing that with the Teton Wilderness.
  • Supposedly sweats a lot
  • Sometimes wears a bandana instead of a hat which would be a clear violation of hike protocal
  • The only nickname he's ever had was Garf (in reference to Garfield the cat: fat, lazy, loves lasagna)  I will fix that.
  • Was once an ultralight aircraft test pilot and didn't die.

Reed, Madison, WI
The lone holdover from 2009, a re-made Reed has been working out and will hardly be recogniable with his new svelte, 50 year old body. This will be Reed's 3rd trip with the group having already experienced the Winds and Beartooths on previous adventures.
  • Rides a scooter in Madison and has managed not to die so far
  • Likes to gamble and then buy beer with his winnings
  • Once saved two lives in a single car-deer collision.
  • New nickname of "Blisters" will be tough to live down.
