July 19: Dayhiking at Two Medicine

For only the 2nd time during the trip we had to deal with rain. It started at about 0600 and showed no signs of slowing down as the sky was overcast and dreary. While it was still just a sprinkle I crawled out of the tent and put some things into the cartop carrier so that we could make a quick escape later that morning.

We stayed in bed until about 0740 and began breaking camp 10 minutes later. By 0815 we were leaving the campground for some breakfast at the West Glacier General Store.

Highway 2 is a great road and we were able to speed around the southern boundary of the park, getting to Two Medicine in about an hour. By 1100 we had picked out a site at Two Medicine campground and began assembling our backpacking gear for tomorrow’s hike. I was looking forward to carrying a lighter load this time around, as was Yumi with her new Gregory.

Just before lunch we went up to the backcountry office and picked up our permit, then back down to the Two Med store for some lunch. We were really starting to get lazy where cooking was concerned.

Yumi felt the need to get back on the trail and suggested we go on a hike to the Aster Falls overlook: an easy 4.5 miles and 500’ climb. It was amazing how we didn’t need to stop for a rest while only carrying a small daypack. Once we made it to the lookout we were rewarded with a nice view of Two Medicine Lake.

After we knocked the rust off of our legs we decided to run up to Rising Sun to try another shower and dinner at the Park Cafe again. The drive up was an adventure as the highway twisted and turned like a serpent. It did start to rain again, but only for a few minutes then cleared up setting us up for another beautiful sunset.
